Summary
Two film-makers shoot a documentary about a conspiracy theorist, only for their subject to disappear without trace. They try to uncover what happened to him, and discover evidence that he may have got too close to a secret society of the political and business elite who do not want their sinister plans being brought to light. A stylistic exercise in creepy paranoia, director Christopher MacBride's crafty combo of All the President's Men and Eyes Wide Shut commandeers beats from genre classics while itself adding a few new tropes to the found-footage genre. Two film-makers (played by Aaron Poole and James Gilbert) are shooting a documentary about a conspiracy theorist who is convinced a privileged secret society is controlling world events - the Kennedy assassination, 9/11, the Credit Crunch, etc - for profit. When he mysteriously disappears off the face of the earth, the duo dig deeper, uncovering the real truth about the Tarsus Club, whose members worship the ancient deity Mithras. It's when they decide to infiltrate the weird cult that things go horribly wrong. Cutting real news footage into his attention-grabbing scenario, MacBride's sly chiller successfully whips up a number of believable conclusions from shaky truths that only reinforce his gripping subject matter. Evoking a sinister atmosphere, this solid effort also packs a final unsettling punch.
