Zac Efron stars in this refreshing comedy adventure, based on the true story of one man's experience of the Vietnam War. Set in the late 1960s, the film follows former merchant seaman John "Chickie" Donohue, who hits upon a wild plan after a night drinking in a New York bar run by Bill Murray's ex-military man. Fed up with anti-war protestors, Chickie decides to deliver beers to his soldier friends out in Southeast Asia as a show of solidarity. Without any paperwork or contacts, he heads out with a huge sack of Pabst Blue Ribbon like a boozy Father Christmas, encountering a seen-it-all photojournalist (an on-form Russell Crowe) and discovering the very real nightmare the young rookies face. In his first movie since the Oscar-winning Green Book, director Peter Farrelly doesn't shirk from pointing the finger at the CIA's brutal involvement. Recalling in tone films like Salvador and The Year of Living Dangerously, the film offers a tribute to friendship that neatly balances humour and heavyweight themes, while a dynamic Efron spearheads a tremendous cast.
