With his 28th feature film, Gladiator director Ridley Scott once again works with soldiers, swords and sandals for a historical drama about the life of French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Beginning in 1793 as the guillotine sends Marie Antoinette's head tumbling during the French Revolution, the film follows Napoleon's swift progression through France's military ranks and corridors of power. Joaquin Phoenix lends gravity aplenty as the complex man often lionised by history, while Vanessa Kirby has screen presence in equal measure as his formidable wife Joséphine. The script gallops through decades of dense history, with battles from the Napoleonic Wars punctuating the domestic and period drama, and the result is more blockbuster than biography. That may risk the scorn of historians, but the sheer spectacle and expertly staged set-pieces make Scott's film an epic fit for an emperor.
