Action thriller starring Jason Statham, Phylicia Rashad and Emmy Raver-Lampman. James Mottram

Jason Statham dishes out vengeance and violence in this gratuitous action film. He plays Adam Clay, a retired operative from a covert group called "the beekeepers". Now an actual beekeeper, Clay spends his days tending to his apiary, until his teacher friend (Phylicia Rashad) takes her own life after being swindled out of her savings. With Clay determined to avenge her, he's drawn into a murky web of cyber crime and corrupt politicians that gets more ridiculous with every revelation. The knuckle-cracking fight scenes are as inventive as they are stomach-churning, with limbs and torsos sent flying. Under the direction of David Ayer (Fury), Statham growls through another one-note lone wolf character, while a subplot involving the victim's FBI daughter (Emmy Raver-Lampman) goes nowhere. At least the villains - played by Josh Hutcherson, Jeremy Irons, Jemma Redgrave and Minnie Driver - lend a bit of class to an otherwise formulaic, nasty and increasingly senseless tale of revenge.
