New York tabloid editor Broderick Crawford finds himself on the wrong side of the news cycle in this melodramatic noir. When his estranged wife (Rosemary De Camp) shows up and threatens to expose his secret past, Mark Chapman (Crawford) accidentally kills her in the ensuing scuffle. While murder detectives struggle to solve the case, the paper's ace reporter John Derek closes in on the truth, aided by ethical feature writer Donna Reed, a normally outspoken critic of her employers' hunger for sensationalism. Based on a novel by former crime newsman and future movie director Samuel Fuller, the film piles on the tension against an atmospheric backdrop of busy 1950s Manhattan. Crawford and Derek are well cast as cocksure figures relishing the seedier side of the industry, but Reed is a little too prim in the role of the more honourable hack. Nonetheless, the movie makes astute observations about the ever-changing face of news media during the energetic heyday of print journalism.
