Tian Xiaopeng's hugely energetic second feature is an astonishing display of virtuoso technique and confirms China's arrival as an animation superpower. The Studio Ghibli-esque plot follows a little girl's undersea adventures with an eccentric chef on board a steampunk submarine powered by pedalling walruses. But the animation style is in a world all of its own, blending 2D and 3D methods with a homage to traditional Chinese ink painting. The result is a vivid, phantasmagoric spectacular that occasionally threatens to leave the actual story behind but which contains enough humour, action and drama to satisfy most tastes. With its theme of losing parental love, it's clearly aimed at children, but will find plenty of adult fans too. Plus, there are two big climaxes - one all-action, the other all-emotion. Both pack a huge punch and bring this magical mystery tour to a satisfying conclusion.
