Terry Staunton

The "Fox" in the title of this fast-paced action thriller is a rebellious young woman (Kiernan Shipka) who escapes an abusive commune and hooks up with a streetwise drug dealer (Krysten Ritter) to steal thousands from a ruthless crime syndicate. However, with a crooked cop (Kiefer Sutherland) on their tail and danger lurking around every corner, Fox must break back into the commune to rescue her captive younger sister. Director and co-writer Sophie Tabet packs a lot into this 1980s-set yarn, albeit at the expense of much character development or narrative clarity. However, it's still a fun ride with inventive knockabout violence and a generous sprinkling of humour. Shipka makes for a gutsy heroine, the perfect yin to Sutherland's seedy yang, and both deliver performances that lift proceedings (slightly) above formulaic, sub-Tarantino fare. Despite some frustrating faults, it's a film that's easy to like.
