Summary
Romantic comedy starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black. After breaking up with her boyfriend, Los Angeles workaholic Amanda is in need of a holiday. An online search persuades her to exchange her California home over Christmas for the remote Surrey cottage of journalist Iris, who has just found out her ex is getting married. But the transatlantic swap soon leads to more romantic entanglements for the two women.

Nancy Meyers's wintry romcom serves up sugar-dusted escapism even as it brushes the messier truths of heartbreak under the carpet. The whimsical set-up sees Brit newspaper columnist Iris (Kate Winslet) and American film businessperson Amanda (Cameron Diaz) swapping homes for the Christmas season. Worn down by unrequited love, Iris jets off to enjoy some sun-soaked LA glamour, while emotionally guarded Amanda heads for the storybook charm of Surrey. Both, inevitably, find love waiting for them. Providing the film with its emotional core, Winslet imbues Iris with quiet vulnerability, while Jack Black is unexpectedly gentle and self-effacing as her Hollywood love interest. Meanwhile, Diaz and Jude Law navigate their romance with ease, their story proving predictable yet charming. Meyers surrounds both of her leads with her signature indulgent visuals - snowy streets and crackling fireplaces - to create a picture-perfect world that, while often softening the story's conflicts instead of fully exploring them, does allow for moments of genuine tenderness. Overall, The Holiday works as a warm, well-upholstered fantasy. It's a cosy indulgence that offers few surprises, but is sure to sweep you into a cheerful hug.
