David Parkinson

Jiang Wen's sprawling study of life in an isolated Chinese village in the last days of the Japanese occupation provides a fascinating insight into a forgotten aspect of the Second World War. The director also stars as the nobody who suddenly becomes the centre of attention after two prisoners - a Japanese soldier and a Chinese translator - are billeted in his house for interrogation. However, it soon becomes clear the hostages have been abandoned and Jiang is forced to make the unenviable choice between disposing of them or risking his own neck to save them.
