Summary

Sean is a model student with a clearly mapped-out future. When he agrees to help the rebellious Flora with her studies in exchange for a university recommendation letter, he treats it as just another test. However, the hours they spend together change their relationship, and the feelings that begin to grow may complicate more than one decision

He's the nerdy president of the physics club with a secretly hot bod, she's the prom queen princess with a secretly sharp mind. They bond; they break up; there's a "race for love" at an airport... Based on a novel by Christine Duann and directed by Fawzia Mirza, this YA romance is extremely formulaic and skirts a fine line between excruciating and adorable. Asher Angel (who starred as young Billy Batson in Shazam!) plays bookish Sean, bribed by the parents of glamorous but listless Flora (Paris Berelc) to date their daughter so she'll focus on her studies more. In exchange, they will pay him and help him get into MIT. Designed in the mould of 1990s teen romcoms She's All That and 10 Things I Hate about You - and indeed 2023's No Hard Feelings - this Gen-Z-targeted update is a considerably lesser film in comparison. That said, the leads give sincere performances that keep the movie's heart beating all the way up to a positive and comparatively unconventional ending, and largely keep this from tipping into insufferable nonsense. But only just.
