This droll, lively French drama from debut feature director Cécile Ducrocq looks at the ups and downs of modern parenting through the unusual lens of sex work. Thirty-something prostitute Marie (Call My Agent's Laure Calamy) works the streets of Strasbourg while trying to motivate her sullen, wayward teenage son Adrien (Nissim Renard). Adrien is accepted to a prestigious culinary school, but Marie must stump up a large down payment that she cannot afford. It's essentially a familiar story, but the film remains fresh and involving with a deftly plotted, character-driven screenplay. Calamy delivers an expert performance, plumbing the more unlikeable traits of her character without becoming off-putting. Renard, meanwhile, is highly convincing, not least to any viewer who's had to deal out advice to grumpy teens. With striking political directness dotted among all the family drama, this is a highly worthwhile watch.
