Road-movie conventions are given a pleasing twist in this breezy comedy, which deals with the subject of disability without being either patronising or politically correct. Paul Rudd stars as a writer trying to deal with tragedy in his own life by starting over as a care-giver. But his inexperience shows when he's given the run-around by a smart-aleck 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy (Submarine's Craig Roberts), who delights in exploiting his condition to make mischief. A power shift in their relationship takes place when Rudd cajoles the teenager into leaving the safety of his home, and the two are soon hitting the road in search of some of the quirkier tourist attractions the US has to offer. Rudd and Roberts spark off each other nicely as they trade pranks and insults, and the sparkling, sweary banter is given extra fizz by Selena Gomez's no-nonsense hitch-hiker. The emotional baggage carried by each of the characters does sometimes threaten to spoil the fun, but director Rob Burnett largely keeps platitudes and sermonising in check, delivering a fist-pumping pay-off that's so unexpected, it's sure to raise a smile.
