Historical in scope yet intimate in its approach, this Oscar-winning documentary from an Israeli/Palestinian film-making collective presents just a few years in the life of a beleaguered West Bank community. Masafer Yatta, a collection of small mountainside Palestinian villages, was occupied by the Israeli military in 1967. In 2019, the government mounted a renewed push to claim further land and displace its residents, under claims of military necessity, and it is the subsequent period of turmoil that locals Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal, along with Israeli journalists Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, doggedly document. Protests continue, while buildings are bulldozed and pleas for humanity are shouted down on national TV. It's a simple diary of a simple situation, narrated plainly but emotively by Adra, who describes the area's recent history and articulates his own ambivalence toward having this "activism" thrust upon him by sheer circumstance. Captured moments of casual and sometimes deadly violence committed by Israeli military officials and citizen agitators are, of course, harrowing. But though undoubtedly grave, this stark film finds heart and humanity in the relationship that develops between Adra and Abraham, and in the dignity with which the citizens of Masafer Yatta resist their gradual expulsion.
