The first foray into fully-fledged fright by director Brian De Palma is a masterful Hitch-cocktail of the sinister and the satirical. De Palma established his flashy style in this well-choreographed shocker about a journalist (Jennifer Salt) who's compelled to investigate when she witnesses her neighbour (Margot Kidder) appear to commit murder. To some extent a modified version of Psycho dealing with duality and psychosis in an incredibly insightful way, this Peeping Tom nightmare is a well-tuned slice of cinematic frenzy complete with red herrings, a fantasy sequence and split-screen suspense. Along with Carrie, De Palma's most fully realised and coherent work.
