This third feature from British-Iranian writer/director Babak Anvari (Under the Shadow) is a skilful genre flick bogged down by a heavy-handed touch. Graffiti artists Toby (George MacKay) and Jay (Percelle Ascott) break into and vandalise the houses of the London elite. Things take a turn, however, when Toby goes it alone and picks on former judge Hector Blake (Hugh Bonneville), who hides a dark secret in his basement. Soon, Toby is nowhere to be seen and his beleaguered mother (Kelly Macdonald) is left to investigate. The breaking-and-entering set pieces are tense, but the exposition scenes become increasingly laboured as the narrative jumps between the characters. Anvari explores timely themes of immigration and integration, but his blunt approach feels overworked, not least in the way that Blake's supposed liberalism in fact hides a deep-seated racism. Meanwhile, MacKay is miscast, Macdonald underused and Bonneville's performance as the avuncular villain is more Paddington than Psycho.
