Tom Dawson

From Andrew and Callum Burn, the father-and-son team responsible for a trio of micro-budgeted Second World War aviation dramas - Lancaster Skies, Battle over Britain and Spitfire over Berlin - comes another celebration of against-the-odds British military heroism. Based on real events in the First World War during the summer of 1917, it concerns a nine-man tank crew, commanded by Captain Richardson (Vin Hawke), which is deployed in the infamous Battle of Passchendaele. Soon they find themselves marooned in a muddy shell crater, under fire from both the German lines and from their own side's artillery, while leaving their armoured vehicle risks them being mown down on the battlefield. On paper, this suggests a gripping tale of desperate survival, with injured soldiers trapped inside their tank and running low on ammunition and water. However, Landship never fully comes alive as cinema. There's a stiffness to the ensemble performances, and little differentiation between the various characters, except for the disciplinarian officer who predictably wins the respect of his men. The close-range firefights in a phantasmagorical no man's land also seem to belong to a different type of action movie.
