The less you know about this bold, artful and provocative chiller by director JT Mollner, the better. Told in six non-sequential chapters that purposefully wrong-foot the viewer, the film follows a deviant predator as they hunt their prey. Supposedly based on a true crime spree, Strange Darling works as a filmic jigsaw puzzle that layers clever art direction with vibrant 35mm images (by actor-turned-cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi). Charismatic leads Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner masterfully navigate the ever-changing character dynamics, and sterling support comes from Ed Begley Jr and Barbara Hershey playing doomsday hippies. With sympathies and hostilities constantly flipping, Mollner keeps the film super-charged and high octane, ending this emotionally perilous and transgressive slasher tale on the most poignant note. This is a twisted serial-killer thriller destined for cult status.
