Mariska Hargitay, lead actor in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, heads up a personal investigation, as she re-evaluates the life of a mother she can barely remember: the star Jayne Mansfield. Just three when she survived the 1967 car crash that killed Mansfield, all she’s had to go on are the recollections of older siblings and the performer’s pouting public image.
It’s a persona that Hargitay admits to being ashamed of, the problematic choices Mansfield made during her short life having left her daughter feeling dislocated and, at times, lost. But what is uncovered is a gulf between the pose Mansfield struck and the person behind the façade.
