Terry Staunton

Marisa Abela stars as Amy Winehouse in this colourful biopic, portraying the singer as a driven figure resisting music biz attempts to package her as a pop star while her private life spirals out of control. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson focuses on Amy's tempestuous relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil (Jack O'Connell) as jumping-off points for the creation of the big hits from the awards-laden album that gives the film its title. Abela shines in inhabiting the curses and contradictions of a major talent struggling with inner demons, although Eddie Marsan and Lesley Manville - as the singer's dad and grandmother, respectively - struggle to convey the concern her family has as she threatens to careen off the rails. The director's attention to detail in the well-staged musical sequences is impressive, but doesn't fare so well in mapping out the dramatic narrative and has a tendency to lapse into cliché. Fans won't learn much they didn't already know about their idol, in a film that leaves too many questions unanswered.
