The uber-powerful are ridiculed to perfection in this lavishly absurd comedy from cult directors Guy Maddin and Evan and Galen Johnson, who use a fictional version of the G7 summit as a jumping-off point for some unforgettably surreal shenanigans. Cate Blanchett is the Chancellor of Germany, the country hosting this year's gathering, Charles Dance is the perplexingly British President of the USA, while Denis Ménochet and Roy Dupuis prove particularly good value as the leaders of France and Canada respectively. As the group tries and fails to come up with a collective statement on an unspecified crisis during a series of disastrous brainstorming sessions, chaos descends and they find themselves wrapped in a dense fog, trying to escape the clutches of reanimated bog creatures. Hilarious from start to finish, Rumours is an inspired take on the ineptitude of politicians that's robust in its satire and superbly performed by an elite ensemble. It combines action heroics, apocalyptic gloom, soap opera angst and social awkwardness into a brilliantly barking blend.
