Steve Morrissey

This chase thriller from debut writer/director John Rosman mixes in elements of sci-fi and spy films to engaging effect. Sweet young fugitive Jess (Hayley Erin) heads on foot towards the Canadian border, pursued by the grimly professional agent Elsa (Sonya Walger). As Jess meets decent everyday Americans en route - in folksy episodes that recall classic TV shows like The Fugitive, Kung Fu and The Incredible Hulk - we begin to question who these women really are, and just why they're making a break for Canada. Made for buttons, Rosman's film uses its slim budget to great effect; the low-key visuals bolster wintry locations that help to convey Jess's resourcefulness and desperation. The accomplished leads add depth to their archetypal roles as hunter and hunted, making this a most unpredictable tale in which we're never entirely sure who to root for. It doesn't all work but, as Rosman confounds expectations with genre shifts and character reveals over a brisk 85 minutes, it's amazing how much of it does.
