Director Ridley Scott returns to the arena of one of his most successful films with this satisfying sequel to Gladiator (2000). Paul Mescal plays Lucius, long-lost son to the late Maximus, the enslaved general played by Russell Crowe in the first movie. Living in a North African colony, Lucius witnesses a vicious sea attack from Roman ships, led by Pedro Pascal's warrior General Acacius. His lover slain, Lucius vows revenge when he is taken to Rome and forced to fight under the watchful eye of Denzel Washington's gladiator wrangler. Aided by some first-rate visual effects, Scott and writer David Scarpa create an indelible portrait of Rome, ruled by the cruel, hysterical emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger). Mescal is a solid lead, handling the physical and emotional aspects of the role with aplomb, while Washington and Pascal bring the requisite gravitas to their roles. It may not quite hit the heights of Gladiator, but it's a sturdy sequel made with finesse.
