A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Set around 260 years before the invisible alien hunter was introduced in Predator, Prey is a slower, more thoughtful but no less captivating film. The 1719 setting means there are no roaring machine guns or choppers this time around, just a young Comanche warrior called Naru (impressive newcomer Amber Midthunder) living by her wits. Naru is determined to prove to her tribe that she can hunt and kill anything the men can, but the sudden arrival of a hi-tech Predator forces her to use her brains rather than brawn. The film's sensitive depiction of Native American culture is refreshing - there's even a Comanche dub available - although some of the film's CGI animals aren't as convincing as they should be. Thankfully, the Predator itself is as ruthless and intimidating as ever. Rest assured that Arnold Schwarzenegger's character in the 1987 original would give a huge thumbs-up to the final act's carnival of gory violence.
