This adaptation of RF Delderfield's play The Orchard Walls caused a few ripples in its day, as it afforded former child star Janette Scott (the daughter of Thora Hird, who cameos as a maid) her first grown-up role. Vernon Gray plays her love interest, the son of a village mechanic (Jack Warner), but Scott's newly widowed mother (Pamela Brown) is appalled by her daughter consorting with someone beneath her social status. While headmistress Kay Walsh sympathises with the sweethearts, the matter is taken out of her hands when they decide to elope to Gretna to prevent Scott from being sent to Canada. Although comedy was his forté, producer-turned-director Mario Zampi knew his way around melodrama, and his film is starchily sweet if a little dated. The 17-year-old Scott exudes star quality, and Erwin Hillier's Technicolor photography is absolutely luminous.
