James Mottram

Lifelong fan and film-maker extraordinaire Martin Scorsese fronts this illuminating, exhaustive documentary about the movies of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. As producers, screenwriters and directors, the pair were famed for a slew of romantic, dreamlike and distinctly British films - such as The Red Shoes and A Matter of Life and Death - that are now considered classics. On camera, Scorsese traces their origins as a partnership, known collectively as the Archers, right through to their parting of ways. Appropriately, Scorsese brings his own work into play, showing the influence of the Archers' output on films such as Raging Bull and The Age of Innocence. He also recounts his friendship with Powell starting in the 1970s - a relationship that blossomed and even saw Scorsese's long-time editor Thelma Schoonmaker marry Powell in 1984. Unsurprisingly, Scorsese's enthusiasm is infectious, while his knowledge is exemplary. Illustrated by some well-chosen clips, including footage of Powell on the set of Scorsese's The King of Comedy, this is a fine tribute.
