IMDB

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Alan Jones

The film that firmly established the blaxploitation genre in the early 1970s is nothing more than an urban ghetto, James Bond-style thriller. But ex-male model Richard Roundtree brings a casual charm to the vicious proceedings as the private dick ("a sex machine to all the chicks" - remember those lyrics?) enlisted to find a Harlem racketeer's kidnapped daughter, and director Gordon Parks gives the action a fast and furious style. Isaac Hayes won an Oscar for the landmark theme song that laid down the ground rules for all the funky, satin-sheet sounds that soon followed in its ground-breaking wake.
