Microbudget 1980s horror The Power peddles that well-worn genre cliché - the cursed artefact that delivers grisly death to all who possess it. In this case it's an Aztec figurine that looks suspiciously like something you'd pick up at an Mexican airport as a last-minute present. Its latest owner is a high-school student, who quickly realises that it's causing weird stuff to occur. When he tells local reporter Sandy about the doll, she dismisses him as deranged, but her ex-boyfriend becomes obsessed - literally - with discovering the truth. It's amazing a film with so little plot makes so little sense, but The Power manages it. Clunky dialogue, low-rent scares and vapid acting don't help matters. The only people who emerge with any credit are composer Christopher Young (later of Hellraiser fame) who provides a peculiar but effective score, and make-up artist Matthew W Mungle (an Oscar winner for Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1993) for a great bit of prosthetics gore at the film's climax.
