Takashi Miike pulls out all the stops for this, his 100th film, a supernatural samurai epic that's gory and glorious, bloody and brilliant. Following the slaying of her parents, young Rin (Hana Sugisaki) learns of an immortal warrior who can help her to wreak revenge. The gruff, disfigured Manji (Takuya Kimura) is struck by the girl's resemblance to his dead sister and undertakes her mission, setting the scene for a showdown with not only the deadly Itto-ryu clan but also the entire Shogunate army. Adapted from the acclaimed, long-running manga, the film is populated with a wild bunch of comic-book crazies, all of whom have a story to tell and a reason to fight. Grudges that go back generations give the characters purpose, and identifying the real villains isn't as clear-cut as the sharpened steel they wield. As memorably plucky as Sugisaki is, the film belongs to Kimura's death-defying hero, who is repeatedly stabbed, hacked, eviscerated and maimed in the course of honouring his pledge - all while retaining his grim sense of humour. A landmark film in a helter-skelter career, Blade of the Immortal proves beyond any doubt that Miike is a master of action, mayhem and storytelling.
