This riveting movie from Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson deftly combines supernatural and serial-killer thriller themes. It's based on a short story by Joe Hill (Horns), who is Stephen King's son, and set in late 1970s Denver where the police seem powerless to catch "the Grabber", an elusive kidnapper of teenagers. So, when bullied introvert Finney Shaw (Mason Thames) is taken by the masked maniac and hidden away in a grotty, sound-proofed basement, the boy's prospects of survival look dire. However, while the villain (chillingly played by Ethan Hawke) takes his time toying with Finney before the kill, the boy discovers that the disconnected old phone in his prison is a hotline to the ghosts of past victims. Can their otherworldly advice save him or will Finney's spunky psychic sister (Stephanie McGraw) be the saviour? It's a terrifyingly tense race-against-time tale that delivers potent scares and contains spot-on performances from Thames (on his debut) and McGraw.
