Summary

New York bachelor David is due to drive to his friend's wedding, but a wheel clamp on his vehicle derails those plans. He acquires a new drive from the mysterious Car Rental Company managed by two nameless agents, who are oddly familiar with his dating history. At the wedding, David meets fellow singleton Sarah and squanders an opportunity to dance with her. On the way home, the rental car's GPS asks him if he would like to embark on a big bold beautiful journey. When David agrees, the virtual assistant guides him to Sarah and they follow a winding route between physical doors that open into episodes from their respective pasts. Romantic drama, starring Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell lead this unconvincing romantic odyssey from writer/director Kogonoda (After Yang). They play a couple of strangers who, after meeting at the wedding of a mutual friend, are given the opportunity to embark on an expedition through their pasts thanks to a bizarre set of circumstances involving an unorthodox car rental service. The central conceit feels a tad forced, and despite the undeniable star power of Robbie and Farrell, neither quite sell the script's unnatural dialogue. Taken alone, some of the individual vignettes - including one in which Farrell's character has a heart-to-heart with his father - are quite touching. However, the attempts at profound observations about the nature of relationships largely falter, especially as Kogonoda fails to give an adequate reason for the central pair's destiny as soulmates. Despite a sprinkling of sweet moments and some nice design touches, it's ultimately not big, bold or beautiful enough to live up to the promise of its title.
