Summary

Mystery horror starring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, with Amy Madigan. A small town is rocked when 17 children from the same school class disappear overnight. Their teacher, Justine, becomes the unofficial prime suspect, with devastated father Archer among those leading the charge against her. But this mass vanishing is only the start of the strange and violent happenings that come to plague the community.

Writer/director Zach Cregger follows his 2022 hit Barbarian with this unnerving and thunderously entertaining horror epic, which won Amy Madigan a best supporting actress Oscar. It follows events in the aftermath of a deeply troubling incident in a suburban US town: one night, without explanation, all but one student in the third-grade class of a new teacher (Julia Garner) vanished from their homes. Divulging further plot details would severely dampen the viewing experience, though suffice it to say that Madigan makes an indelible impression as the peculiar Aunt Gladys. The non-linear structure employed by Cregger - we follow events from six perspectives - allows the film to explore the complex ways people's psyches are affected by broken communities, traumatic events and surrounding public storms. Each chapter gradually teases more information about the bizarre events engulfing the town, resulting in a propulsive, perfectly paced thriller that leaves things tantalisingly mysterious until a reveal that will appeal to fans of 2024's Longlegs. There are frights aplenty, with Cregger tapping into nightmarish, fairy-tale imagery, but also evidence of the director's comedic roots. The deft way in which he juggles those tones makes Weapons a refreshing triumph.
