This slice of warm-hearted social realism unfolds in the working-class northern Cork suburb of Knocknaheeny. Withdrawn 17-year-old Christy (impressive newcomer Danny Power) has been kicked out of his foster home and is temporarily living with his older half-brother Shane (Diarmuid Noyes) and Shane's girlfriend Stacey (Emma Willis). Relations between the siblings are fraught, though, and Christy is soon being encouraged by his cousins to join in their criminal activities. Combining emotional honesty with robust humour, debut Irish film-maker Brendan Canty confidently develops his same-titled 2019 short film into an engaging feature. Avoiding the nihilism that can afflict urban dramas about marginalised youth, Canty pays tribute to the resilience and camaraderie of the community that eventually helps Christy to discover a sense of belonging and purpose. The film boasts a strong sense of place - the city's Brutalist water tower is put to effective use - and gains added authenticity from its casting of local teenagers in supporting roles.
