Dirty politicians and their tech masters are among the targets of this take on the disaster film from Adam McKay (The Big Short), which plays out like a farcical Armageddon. When a PhD student (Jennifer Lawrence) and her astronomy professor (Leonardo DiCaprio) identify a comet set to destroy the Earth, they take the information to the celebrity president (Meryl Streep), whose obnoxious son (Jonah Hill) is her chief of staff and who is distracted by her involvement in a sex scandal. Astonished by the lack of action, the scientists leak the story to the press, including Cate Blanchett's catty morning show host, before chaos inevitably ensues. There are enough decent gags for this to occasionally amuse, yet there's something blindingly obvious about most of the satire which, in its swipes at Trump mania and the rejection of expert advice, already feels dated. The starry cast are game, with Mark Rylance's tech weirdo making an impression, but they are mainly saddled with one-note roles. Lawrence sets herself apart as the only relatable character, who views the whole debacle with appropriate incredulity.
