A convincing performance from Dennis Garcia as a deeply closeted barber pulls together this otherwise threadbare gay romantic drama set in Brooklyn. With his social circle dominated by the dangerously homophobic drug dealer Cuz (Keet Davis), Quique (Garcia) may never be able to be his true self. However, when he meets hunky Irishman Kevin (James Physick), things veer towards the serious... in more ways than one. Despite the modern setting, this film feels weirdly old-fashioned; as though it was written in 1990 and only filmed 30 years later. The result is a story that arrives already worn out, filled with tired tropes and easily recognisable characters. The cast do their best with a clichéd script - though Kevin's breezy Irish dialogue is wince-worthy at times - and the sex scenes do at least add some sizzle. Quique is also a psychologist's dream, convincingly lashing out at those trying to help him through his pain. But Barrio Boy is, at its heart, too thin a concept, pointlessly retelling a familiar story with nothing new to add.
