In 1994 Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson was approached by the UN to play a concert in the war-torn capital of Bosnia, and this passionate and personal documentary chronicles the story of one of the most unlikely rock shows of modern times. Beset by logistical obstacles and danger at every turn, the gig was nonetheless a triumphant success, and Tarik Hodzic's film weaves the star's own frequently comic recollections with the evocative memories of local fans decades after the event. Dickinson has always been one of heavy metal's most erudite figures and proves to be an engaging raconteur, but it's the audience interviews that leave a lasting impression, both as a love letter from young Bosnians to their beleaguered city and as an illustration of the healing power of music. The soundtrack is peppered with choice cuts from the Dickinson and Maiden back catalogues, although it ultimately plays a secondary role to extraordinary tales of hope and optimism from the front line of a savage conflict.
