Summary
Furry and feathered rivals swap bodies and see the world through each other's eyes in director Nathan Greno's life-affirming computer-animated caper. Ollie (Michael B Jordan) is an otter-like creature called a pookoo, who lives in a valley filled with friends and foes. He frequently comes under airborne attacks from green birds including Ivy (Juno Temple) and during one skirmish, their pair collide with a glowing purple flower. When they regain consciousness, Ollie and Ivy have swapped bodies and are hopelessly ill-prepared to survive in the wild in their new physical forms. A helpful fish called Boogle (Tracy Morgan) tells the pair that he has seen more purple flowers, which could allow them to revert to their original forms. Ollie and Ivy put their differences aside to travel across perilous terrain in search of the purple blooms but the path ahead is littered with potentially lethal obstacles including a ravenous pack of wolves.

In general, the joy of a body-swap comedy is to see actors playing each other and against type - see Freaky, the three screen versions of Freaky Friday, Freakier Friday, the 2010s Jumanji films etc. So, doing it in animation doesn't quite hold the same appeal. Nonetheless, Swapped, from Tangled director Nathan Greno, is adorable enough in its own right. Michael B Jordan voices Ollie, a snuffly little woodland critter called a "pookoo" who accidentally switches bodies with Juno Temple's Ivy, a beautiful bird. It's especially awkward because the pair's respective species are in competition over precious resources - but their encounter with the predatory firewolves goes a long way to building bridges... Though this had the misfortune to be released just weeks after Pixar's similarly themed Hoppers, it works on its own terms. Greno's film is a good-natured eco-romp with a cheeky sense of humour and rich visuals, including stand-out underwater sequences in which the two leads hook up with a friendly fish (voiced by Tracy Morgan). Suitable for youngsters, with a strong environmental message, this should be a hit with kids, and Temple and Jordan have good chemistry. Sweet and gentle summer fun.
