Matt Glasby
Independent writer/director Macon Blair's follow-up to his remake of The Toxic Avenger harks back to the adult comedies of the 1980s and 90s, as well as Midnight Run, to which it owes a clear debt. It pairs two losers, religiously devout Davis (O'Shea Jackson Jr) and dropout Mark (Dave Franco), for what looks like an easy job: driving rich kid Sheridan (Mason Thames) to rehab. But Sheridan is no pushover, and when he spikes their drinks and escapes, the mismatched pair must work together to get the lad back - or face ruin at the hands of their no-nonsense boss (played by Grace Junot). It makes for an overly picaresque plot that blurs the film's focus in its latter stages, at which point it coasts instead on the leads' undeniable chemistry. But the busy story is at least packed with memorably eccentric characters - including Kiernan Shipka's bored Russian stripper, Peter Dinklage's quietly terrifying kidnapper and Nicholas Braun's redneck gangster rapper - and features some laugh-out-loud moments. Blair, who also enjoys a small role as a drug dealer, keeps the pace up with wit and verve to spare.
