Summary

Holmes, retired to Sussex, is drawn into a last case when, arch enemy Moriarty, arranges with an American gang, to kill one John Douglas, a country gentleman with a mysterious past. Holmes' methods baffle Watson, and Lestrade, but his results astonish them. In a long flashback, the victim's wife tells the story of the sinister Vermissa Valley.

This 1930s-set mystery was Arthur Wontner's fourth time playing the world's greatest detective out of an eventual five. A adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Valley of Fear, about the apparent murder of a country gentleman, it suffers from the same issue as that novel: an overlong flashback, set in America, which takes far too much attention away from its star. When he is on screen, Wontner is a cheerful Holmes - although there are only so many times he can exclaim "My dear Watson!" before descending into parody. Ian Fleming (no, not the 007 creator) is an underused Dr Watson, while Lyn Harding entertainingly channels his inner Brian Blessed as a panto-villain Professor Moriarty. With all the elements (and, yes, "elementaries") present and correct, it's a shame the central case doesn't deliver much drama. A harmless footnote in the long history of on-screen Baker Street regulars.
