Summary

In the near future, singletons can undergo a simple Soul Connex test to identify their one true love, cutting our years of potentially fruitless dating. Journalist Simon (Brett Goldstein) is in love with his best friend since college, Laura (Imogen Poots), but cannot muster the words to declare how he feels. Instead, he generously pays for Laura to take the test and she subsequently marries Lukas (Steven Cree) and prepares to raise a family. While Laura professes to be happy, validating the test's success rate, Simon continues to silently pine from afar, which doesn't bode well for his fledgling romance with Andrea (Zawe Ashton)

James Mottram

Two college friends harbour deep feelings for each other in this deeply disappointing alt-reality romance. Simon (Brett Goldstein) and Laura (Imogen Poots) have been "BFFs" for years, but she's with Lukas (Steven Cree), the father of her child, and he hooks up with Andrea (Zawe Ashton), though no-one seems to excite him like Laura. At its core, there's a very ill-explained "test" these characters have taken to see who their soulmate is - an idea explored to better effect in 2023's Fingernail. Scripted by Ted Lasso star Goldstein and director William Bridges, this is hampered by poor dialogue, stilted performances and a jagged screenplay that frequently jumps in time to no great effect. "I don't know how to love anyone else," wails Simon at one point, but the lack of true feeling makes this feel inauthentic. The gruff-voiced Goldstein doesn't fare well as a romantic lead, although the final scenes, set near the beautiful white cliffs of Dover, at least conclude on a visually memorable note.
