If you're a fan of the early Coen brothers films - Blood Simple, Raising Arizona - then Lake George is probably for you. A minimalist neo-noir in which things go comedically wrong, it stars Shea Whigham as an inept hitman tasked with whacking a mobster's ex, played by Carrie Coon. But instead of killing her, dithery Don teams up with ballsy Phyllis and together the two of them set off in an old Mercedes on a caper to relieve the mobster (Glenn Fleshler) of his ill-gotten stack. It's familiar terrain but writer/director Jeffrey Reiner presents it all as if it's never been done before - the attention to small details pays off particularly well in the casting of minor characters. This is a good-looking, funny and offbeat film, with great pace and Grand Guignol bloodshed offset by dark humour. But ultimately its success comes down to the interlaced playing of Coon and Whigham, two actors often in supporting roles proving they have what it takes as front-and-centre leads. A little gem.
