This low-budget action flick from Brazil is basically a scuzzy, sweaty take on The Hunger Games - with added martial arts. In the ruins of post-apocalypse Rio de Janeiro, the country's illegal "animal lottery", a simple betting game, has morphed into a death sport. Masked competitors from the poorest classes race through the city's crumbling buildings, taking each other out when the opportunity presents itself, while the rich bet on the winners. Slum-dwelling Mano (Matheus Abreu) has no interest in the games until he is forced into racing to save his sister. Co-directed by Fernando Meirelles (City of God), the film valiantly struggles to disguise its derivative, cliché-hobbled script with some low-rent sadomasochism, swathes of bare flesh and plenty of authentic Brazilian cultural seasoning. There are moments of visual flare and inventive action, but the frenetic editing often swamps the physical stunts rather than grandstanding them. Given the heavy presence of both parkour and the Afro-Brazilian martial art capoeira, that's a real shame.
