Review

Simon O'Hagan

“I am more than just the manner of my execution,” Georgi Markov declares from beyond the grave, and he’s not wrong.

For a certain generation, the name resonates. Markov was a Bulgarian writer whose murder via poisoned-tip umbrella in London in 1978 was one of the most macabre episodes of the Cold War. Marek Horn’s elegantly composed tale invites us to see the whole man, fascinating as he was, beautifully portrayed here by the great Simon McBurney.

Christopher Eccleston helps round out a fine cast, and the whole thing oozes quality.
