Drifter Coburn Thompson acquires a ready-made family in this genial spaghetti western. Marking Bud Spencer's first solo outing without Terence Hill (the pseudonyms adopted by Italian actors Carlo Pedersoli and Mario Girotti), the film was made to appease prolific screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi for going uncredited on the Hill-Spencer classic, They Call Me Trinity (1970). The script neatly switches focus at regular intervals, as Coburn becomes the guardian of young Chip Anderson (Renato Cestiè) following the murder of his uncle. But, lingering in the background, are Sonny Bronston (Jack Palance) and sheriff/preacher Franciscus (Francisco Rabal), who want Coburn dead for differing reasons. Director Maurizio Lucidi teases out the significance of Palance's travelling companion (Dany Saval) and a dirt-eating eccentric (Franco Giacobini), while making splendid use of the Almeria wilderness (and the tumbledown ranch that had been built for Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West). He also stages three knockabout punch-ups, in a bank, a saloon, and at a house-warming party that gets very over-heated.
