With this intense but wayward drama, Vladimir de Fontenay adapts David Vann's semi-autobiographical story collection, Legend of a Suicide. After years away, Tom (Swann Arlaud) persuades his ex-wife (Tuppence Middleton) to let him take their teenage son, Roy (Woody Norman), on a year-long adventure on an island in a Norwegian fjord. So remote that it's accessible only by a hydroplane flown by Anna (Alma Pöysti), Sukkwan looks spectacular in the autumnal sunshine. But harsher reality comes with the winter and Roy begins to doubt whether Tom's survivalist skills are up to scratch as one crisis tumbles in on another. Arlaud and Norman show admirable commitment while working in difficult conditions, and cinematographer Amine Berrada ably contrasts the icy expanses and the cabin-feverish interiors. However, episodes involving a hungry bear, a fall down a wooded incline, a case of exposure, and grandpa's revolver test the audience's patience before a slipshod twist that requires a raft of captions to make it seem even vaguely plausible. Ambitious stuff, but ultimately underwhelming.
