The sinister potential of slumber is explored in this creepy but comedic film from South Korean writer/director Jason Yu. It follows Soo-jin (Train to Busan's Jung Yu-mi), the hard-working, heavily pregnant wife of aspiring actor Hyun-su (Lee Sun-kyun, in his final film role). The pair seem blissfully happy, but when Hyun-su starts to sleep-talk, sleepwalk and worse, he becomes an unnerving presence and is diagnosed with a sleep disorder. The couple initially face the challenge with cheerful practicality, but when their daughter is born, the protectiveness, paranoia and exhaustion tip Soo-jin over the edge. Sleep benefits from a neat, expertly executed concept and an irreverent, amiable air, which ultimately gives way to something more deranged. It cleverly riffs on common pregnancy and new mum anxieties, giving it substance and relatability. Offering its own playful take on horror tropes - including possession - the film largely roots itself in reality, but keeps you guessing as its heroine becomes increasingly unhinged. Meanwhile, stars Lee and Jung are superb.
