Summary

Biographical drama starring Jacob Fortune-Lloyd as Beatles manager Brian Epstein. In the 1960s, middle-class Jewish businessman Epstein encounters a group of working-class Liverpool lads and is convinced that their music will become the sound of a generation. But as he shapes the Beatles' meteoric rise, Epstein's personal life is beset by heartbreak and personal demons.

Terry Staunton

Jacob Fortune-Lloyd stars as the Beatles' late manager Brian Epstein in this solid biopic that might have been more satisfying if less screen time was devoted to the group itself. Epstein, of course, was integral to the band's success right up until his death in 1967, aged 32. But while the initial meetings (and friction) between the middle-class businessman and the working-class rockers serve the narrative well, the band's subsequent meteoric rise is a tale already well told and needs little reiteration. Nonetheless, the period detail is impressive, and Fortune-Lloyd is terrific in the lead role as the troubled and tormented entrepreneur. Yet the screenplay rarely goes beyond scratching the surface of his uneasy relationship with his strait-laced Jewish parents (Eddie Marsan, Emily Watson), the guilt of clandestine homosexual encounters, or his escalating drug dependency as the "boys" become superstars. A scene illustrating Epstein's close friendship with Cilla Black (Darci Shaw) is an intimate, beautifully staged highlight, and more of the same would have helped Midas Man rise above box-ticking biographical norms.
