A skater boy comes of age in writer/director Mikey Alfred's amiable and authentic-feeling indie drama. Ryder McLaughlin stars as 18-year-old Michael, who's caught at a crossroads between further education and pursuing a career in skateboarding. In truth, it's not much of a dilemma. As he ambles through life, it's clear he feels he has what it takes to be the next Tony Hawk, although his single-parent father (Vince Vaughn) has other ideas, insisting that Michael put his focus on college or join him at work in construction. Between Michael dumping his friends for the cool crowd at the skate park and flirting with Stanford prospect Rachel (Miranda Cosgrove), the complexities of his life are neatly realised by Alfred, whose own background in the California skate community adds to the film's sunbaked texture. While it hardly breaks new ground, covering much the same terrain as Jonah Hill's 2018 film mid90s (which Alfred co-produced), this is still an engaging look at the confusions and conflicts of adolescence.
