Following 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller returns to the Wasteland for this stupendous spin-off from his post-apocalyptic Mad Max franchise. This time, the focus is not Max, but Furiosa, Fury Road's one-armed warrior first played by Charlize Theron, with Miller telling her origin story. Played by Alyla Browne as a girl, then Anya Taylor-Joy as a young woman, Furiosa falls into the hands of Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), the violent leader of a horde of marauders who has his eyes on unseating Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme), the corpulent ruler in the all-powerful Citadel. Filled with impressive action, including one jaw-dropping assault on a moving War Rig, Furiosa is every bit as bonkers as Fury Road. Browne and Taylor-Joy bring the titular hero alive, while Tom Burke (TV's Strike) admirably fills a Max-shaped hole as Praetorian Jack, a mentor to Furiosa. Abandoning his Thor persona, Hemsworth also thrills as the avaricious villain (who, in a nice touch, even carries a teddy bear strapped to his back). Brilliantly executed, this is how blockbusters should be made.
