This may not be the most famous 1960 film to boast a character named Marion Crane, but there's much to commend about this train-bound thriller. Dennis Waterman (credited as Denis) made his screen debut as Ted Lewis, the youngster who doesn't realise that his recently paroled father, Roy (Norman Wooland), has kidnapped him because his grandmother (Irene Arnold) has browbeaten his mother (Silvia Francis) into keeping them apart. What Roy doesn't know, however, is that his son has recently been diagnosed with diabetes, which proves a ticking time-bomb. Ernest Morris was always a steady director and he prevents the plot twists from lapsing into melodrama, as the police give chase. Playing effective strangers, Wooland and Waterman establish an affecting rapport, with the latter's excitement tailing off to his father's consternation as his insulin shot starts to wear off. As fellow rail passenger Marion, Jane Hylton provides an empathy that is very much absent from Irene Arnold's imposing display as the formidable but undeniably clichéd mother-in-law.
