Steve Morrissey

This vastly entertaining action thriller from Joe Carnahan (Smokin' Aces) stars Frank Grillo as an ex-special-forces soldier stuck in a time loop. Roy Pulver wakes up every morning on the day of his death - by bullet, bomb, machete, car crash, samurai sword and more. Trying to find out why this scenario keeps repeating, Roy reaches out to his ex-wife (Naomi Watts), a techie at a shady megacorp headed by an even shadier colonel (Mel Gibson). Carnahan cheekily bolts the myth of Osiris - the Egyptian god of resurrection - to a video-game aesthetic, while Grillo sells the movie with an old-guy-action-hero nonchalance nearly as impressive as his muscle definition. "Geri-action" it may be (there is a reference to Liam Neeson), but Carnahan understands how this sort of film works, delivering a fast and fun actioner that plays out like a spectacularly gonzo Groundhog Day.
